Eleanor Rigby • The Beatles

from Yellow Submarine Songtrack

So this is a remix they made on 1999 for the Yellow Submarine Songtrack (which is different to the “normal” Yellow Submarine album; this one doesn’t have orchestral music). So please listen to it. The mix is much better than the normal stereo one we all know.

These mixes are amazing. I’d love to see this done with every Beatles record. I’d gladly play for all of the records again, as long as the remixed versions did not replace the original remastered versions in the catalog.

Forced meme?

I’m not sure if it’s the not-so-awkwardly-quick but with-purpose photoshop cutout or the lack of recognition/cultural significance of this particular 8th grader’s face, but this doesn’t really prey on the normal, casual conventions of a meme. I feel like this is tumblr specific — like if I tried to explain it to anyone who doesn’t tumblr, they’d tune out halfway through and then rejoin when they realize my sentence has completed and say “Oh, that’s very interesting…”

Perhaps, to a certain extent, I AM this 8th grader and feel slighted because I’ve never really been baptised in Yo La Tengo, but I’ve felt a slight taint of common music elitism in some these posts. which is not to say that the “Yo La Tengo”s of the world are bad, it’s just not something that you should expect ANY mainstreamer to know about. Kids that age listen to Miley Cyrus and The Jonas Bros. (and Lady Gaga without a chaperone present) but they just aren’t far enough out of the American pop-culture bubble to be expected to appreciate anything of the ‘Yo La’ variety.

I understand the depth of ignorance in deeply critiquing a meme when the WHOLE POINT is to just ignore it or lol once or twice, but this one is pretty hum-drum. The creator even refers to it as a meme, which I fear I am just not meta enough to appreciate.

But this one is good too.

But this one is good too.

shynessisnice:

I’ve been thinking about this question a lot, and was wondering what other folks might think. First, the setup:

Background

I’m feeling super anxious right now. I’ve got some good projects going though, as is always the case with contract work / freelancing, I have a constant nagging suspicion that this batch will be the last of them and the future is nothing but either office / The Office life or street begging or paying my parents rent. Thats a crazy thing to worry about, I’m not having money problems or anything, but it still keeps me up at night.

Its the kind of jitters that makes you think “whats the point of working so hard?” I don’t mean to sound like a GreenFire kid talking about “Into The Wild” or anything, but it does sort of make me think “if building up savings isn’t calming” and I don’t have too many expensive things I want to buy, I better make sure I’m spending my time doing something thats building to something valuable, right?

And sometimes that works out well. I’ve been involved in a couple of projects I’m very proud of (StimulusWatch, Mercatus Center, OpenRegs, a Reason iPhone App that will hopefully be approved by Apple shortly, etc.)*, and that all feels like time well spent, but those are the exceptions, and not the ones that help pay the bills. So I’ve been thinking about what I’d feel more excited about day-in-and-day-out. Some things I’m thinking about include:

Moving to DC and trying to take up open government related programming full time (this sort of thing is something I feel passionate about and proud to be associated with)

Taking a 12 month break from contract work and only making my own apps and music, and trying to live off the revenue, which seems like it could be sweet and would definitely give me a self-made-man kind of silly pride which I like

Deciding ambition isn’t worth the stress and getting a 9-to-5 in a cool, employee friendly, wii in the break room kind of company

Going back to school for philosophy / political theory, which listening to Joseph Heath recordings has gotten me really excited about again

So this was my thinking, but then I though, what about just getting serious about trying to get in a relationship and maybe, in the not too far away future, having a kid. That seems awesome to me for so many reasons.

So here is the my question Tumblr World:

The Honest Question about Full Life Satisfaction

Whats a better way to achieve satisfaction and happiness: achieving great goals, or family life? Cause right now, I ain’t got no damn idea. I’m split.

Or, to put it another way, in your twenties, what do you think is the better path to happiness: ambition or pursuing a well tended, responsible family life (which I suppose is just a different type of ambition, but still)?

(I’m thinking all “you can have both” style responses are dodges, though maybe thats wrong too…)

*This parenthetical is basically a long list of why I owe human champion Jerry Brito 1,000s of imported beers

Obviously item #3 is not going to work. Maybe it’s my me brain talking, but the last time I had a dead end job, I wanted to hang myself… And then I got a relevant job in my field and that made me a little tired as well after a while (and certainly enabled an alcohol buying plan)

I just got off a 7 or 8 month “break” from real work, but still had freelance to supplement. Honestly, I feel the money sting pretty badly, but I have a great support system here so I definitely think it’s good to be around people you can trust and that care about you (which you can always find elsewhere as well).

I’ve always been a FIRM believer that you have to find your passion in life and plant yourself in the ground in a place (physically/mentally) where you can actually DO it. Until that point, starting a family is probably a recipe for a self-loathing and frustrated grind of an existence.

Conversely, if you are happily planted when you start a family, you will pass along the wealth of cheer to your spawn and they will probably grow up to be decent and intelligent little humanitarians. (always a genetic gamble, but I digress)

So in summary, MY life plan is to satisfy my own personal and VASTLY needy needs before trying to settle down and attempt to domesticate my as-yet-untamed imaginations. How you go about it is just a question of personal preference. School, work, personal or as part of something bigger, weight lifting, or making barrels of money…

——

EDIT: One more thing. Don’t worry about getting too old! I’ve placed my family starting age limit at 40 hahaha. Lets hope it doesn’t take me that long to make something of myself. In any average life expectancy, you’ll live ANOTHER 40 YEARS after 40, so I don’t plan on sweating it.

HDR compander….
hungryghoast:

And here’s where I school you on more than you ever wanted to know* about Presidential Records and the Bush Administration.

The shady tactics of the Bush Administration to obscure (or outright destroy) its records was a much discussed issue while I was in Grad School for Archives. Because of what we were learning and what was happening, I think we were able to see the injustice of the present and the future unfolding.

Meredith Fuchs, general counsel to the National Security Archive, said “many poor choices were made during the Bush administration and there was little concern about the availability of e-mail records despite the fact that they were contending with regular subpoenas for records and had a legal obligation to preserve their records.”

Two things to regard here.

1) The National Security Archive has nothing to do with the NSA nor the gov’t in general and is actually an affiliate of George Washington University devoted to promoting FOIA and archiving declassified gov’t material (y’know, just to clear up some possible confusion that articles like this always leave open)

2) Fuchs is correct, aside from the Federal Records Act the Bush Administration was also (and more specifically) in violation of The Presidential Records Act (originally created in 1978).

As you might have guessed from the date, the PRA was created because of the actions of the Nixon Administration to try and obscure its own criminal acts. Nixon is the face of criminal political manipulation in America so it’s only fitting that Bush should be tied to him.

The PRA was updated in 1993 when the Reagan and Bush I Administrations, related to investigations into Iran-Contra (and law suits against them regarding the destruction and/or recovery of those records), tried to claim that electronic records didn’t fall under the PRA. They were put in their place by the ruling of the U.S. District Court in favor of the petitioners. Thus, even if the claim of the Bush Administration that these e-mails were lost accidentally was true (it isn’t), then in my opinion they would still be in violation of the PRA due to gross negligence. Again, the (second) Bush Administration is fittingly tied to the criminal acts of a previous administration, this time his father’s.

It should be noted, also, that G.W. Bush amended the PRA via executive order in an attempt to keep more records out of the National Archives and to particularly guard the records of the Office of the Vice President (Hmmmm, I wonder why?! cough**Cheney’s a criminal**cough). Thankfully President Obama has issued an executive order revoking Bush’s on the PRA. (and yes, it’s absurd that Executive Order should be allowed to affect this law at all).

Even setting aside the separate issues of classified documents and various attempts at secrecy in other parts of the government under President G.W. Bush, why so much secrecy (to the point of criminal acts) in regards to what should be the official record of the Office of The President? To turn one of the Administration’s own arguments in regards to surveillance against them, if they were doing nothing wrong, what is there to hide? Destruction (attempted or successful) of government records seems to be a common act amongst governments (mostly dictatorships) seeking to hide criminal acts, particularly abuses of human rights. Given what we already know about the G.W. Bush Administration, I think their efforts to cover their tracks lead to logical assumptions and an increased disbelief that no members of the administration will have to face up to what they’ve done. One hopes that these (thankfully recovered) e-mails will help shed some light on things, but it is unlikely that former officials will feel any heat even from the law-suit that helped recover these records.

Of course, there is also this caveat:

But the public might not see any of the e-mails for quite some time because they will now go through the National Archives normal process for releasing presidential and agency records.

Sorry, folks, but this job is hard and takes some time (particularly considering the resources, or lack-there-of, that we’re given), despite what Jon Stewart might think.

*you probably actually want to know more, but you won’t, because as you’ve surmised by now when it comes to record keeping Bush and his team were a set of real fuckers.

Archivists are heroes!

i’ve heard that Archivists make the best lovers.

Truth in bold.

"Watching “Avatar,” I felt sort of the same as when I saw “Star Wars” in..."

“Watching “Avatar,” I felt sort of the same as when I saw “Star Wars” in 1977.
